I respect the beliefs of so many different people in our society. What I do not respect is when someone tries to force their beliefs on myself or my family. Especially if that means they support laws that increase the risk of death or disability for those that I love.
When someone claims to be pro-life but then advocates for laws that increase the risk of death or disability for women in our country, one cannot consider that to be "pro-life".
When abortion is outlawed, that directly increases the risk of death or disability for women. That is the medical truth. Our country is seeing the effects of restrictive abortion laws in various states since the Dobbs v. Jackson ruling in 2022. Maternal mortality and morbidity are rising in those states.
In truth, the pro-choice position supports life far more.
I respect that some people have a religious belief that the embryo or fetus is more important than the woman who has that life in their body. I do not believe that those people have the right to force their beliefs on the rest of our society. Does the United States have freedom of religion or not? While the language of freedom of religion is still in our constitution, the practical reality for many women in many states is that freedom of religion is gone- it is only the religion of some that is accepted.
As a Christian who believes in a loving God and who believes that God does not think all abortions are wrong, it is hard for me to see the conservative Christian agenda that pushes to outlaw abortions.
It is hard for me to see those so-called Christians claim they are caring for women with their laws that cause more women to die or be disabled in this life. What would Jesus do?
